GENEVIEVE TOBIN
Large 11x14 b/w photo of Tobin in a dark gown - her hands clasp under
her chin
Photograph signed: "Thanks for/remembering
the/memory/Genevieve". B/w11x14. Genevieve Tobin (1899-1995, born in
New York City) was an American actress who performed in 40 films and 12
Broadway plays. She debuted on the silver screen in Uncle Tom's
Cabin as Eva and spent most of the next two decades on the stage before
taking up movie acting for good in A Lady Surrenders (1930). Most of
her roles were in comedies as a glamorous leading lady, but not all of them;
she briefly played Cordelia in a Broadway production of King Lear (1923)
and a bored businessman's wife in The Petrified Forest (1936). She also
had a fine singing voice. Her rendition of Cole Porter's song You Do
Something to Me with William Gaxton helped to make Porter's 1929 Broadway
production of Fifty Million Frenchmen (1929-1930) a hit. She virtually
retired from acting after marrying her second husband William Keighley in
1938; her last movie was No Time for Comedy in 1940. Lightly
worn at corners. Otherwise, fine condition.
