GEOFFREY TAYLOR
The poet most associated with Ireland signed this typed letter
Typed letter signed "G.T.". One sheet, 5x8, folded. Written in Ballinteer,
County Dublin, Ireland. In full: "Dear Geoffrey, Here is Edward Days [not
included]. Rather nice notes on modern artists at the end, but not much else. Need
I tell you that I should be delighte d [sic] and flattered to have your 'Victorians'
inscribed to me? Sorry I hadn't time to round up all my wild Irish Bulls pursuing
the matter in hand as it might be a carrot, or substitute Hopkins or someone for
Masefield. Still, it was well-intended any way. Don't bother to acknowledge Dayes.
Damn you for being in Ireland and not coming here. Yes, get a house on the Suir.
Ireland's not a bad place for being broke in." Poet Geoffrey Taylor (1900-1956),
born Geoffrey Basil Phibbs, published several collections of poetry, including
Withering of the Figleaf (1927), It Was Not Jones (1928) and A Dash of Garlic
(1933), before becoming poetry editor for the literary magazine The Bell. At The
Bell, he devoted a lot of space to Northern Irish poets. He also compiled the
poetry collections Irish Poems Today (1944) and Irish Poets of the
Nineteenth Century (1958). His literary associations include Robert Graves and
Laura Riding. Lightly toned, creased and soiled. Typewriting, but not signature
is cut off at right edge in places. Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise, fine
condition.
