GEORG SCHNEEVOIGHT and AUNE ANTTI
Portuguese program for the Orquestra Sinfónica Nacional in San Carlos, Brazil, signed in 1944 by conductor George Schneevoight and soprano Aune Antti
Program signed "George Schneevoight/1.VI.44" in black ink under his photo and "Aune Antti" in blue ink under her photo. B/w, 8 pages including covers, 6¼x9¼, 2 sheet folded, front and verso. Portuguese-language program for a June 1, 1944 performance in San Carlos, Brazil of the Orquestra Sinfónica Nacional, with Schneevoight and Antti. Known for his intense and passionate conducting of Romantic music, SCHNEEVOIGHT (1872-1947) began his musical career as a cellist in the 1890s, including a stint as principal cellist for the Helsinki Philharmonic (1896-1902). He started conducting in 1901, with a career based in Riga, Latvia and Helsinki, Finland but with conducting jobs as far afield as Stockholm, Sydney and Los Angeles. He was chief conductor of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra in Malmö, Switzerland from 1930 until his death. Schneevoight was a close friend of composer Jean Sibelius and frequently played his music; so taken was he by Sebelius' work that he reportedly wept while conducting it. Finnish soprano ANTTI (1901-1983), born Kerttu Aune Anttonen, debuted in Helsinki, Finland in 1931 and performed in Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo, Berlin, Warsaw, Budapest, Paris and Lisbon. She also toured the United States and Canada in 1937 and 1938 with the Salzburg Opera Guild. She was awarded Finland's Order of the Lion in 1972. Lightly toned and creased. Signatures have smeared lightly in places but are legible. Light ink transference. Lightly discolored along spine. Light tears at top and bottom edges. Otherwise in fine condition.
