GEORGE A. BROWN
British Foreign Secretary and intra-Party rival of Prime Minister Harold Wilson
Photograph signed: "George Brown". B/w, 6½x8½. George Brown (1914-1985) was passing out leaflets for Britain's Labour Party at the age of 8. Rising in the Party's youth movement and as a union organizer, he was elected to Parliament in 1945. Brown, a member of the Party's right wing, lost a bid for Party leadership to Harold Wilson in 1963, but helped plan the successful 1964 election campaign which made Wilson Prime Minister. As Foreign Secretary (1966-1967), Brown persuaded Wilson to renew Britain's bid for membership in the European Community, a request vetoed again by France's President De Gaulle. Regarded even by his rivals as a shrewd thinker, Brown damaged his own prospects repeatedly with his hot temper and heavy drinking. (He was drunk during a televised BBC tribute to the slain President Kennedy, and at a Cabinet meeting where he railed against Wilson.) Brown resigned as Foreign Secretary in 1967 and was defeated for re-election in 1970. He entered the House of Lords as Lord George-Brown. Light corner creases. Paperclip impression at upper left. Otherwise, fine condition.
