Autograph Sentiment signed: "& oblige yours truly/Arthur
Sketchley", 3¾x1. Affixed in lower margin of a 6x8½ book engraving, taken
from a photograph (2 surfaces).George Rose (1817-1882), who wrote
under the pen name "Arthur Sketchley" tutored sons of aristocratic Catholic
Englishman before embarking on a writing career. He wrote a play and two
novels, but was best known for a series of books by a "Mrs. Brown" (Mrs.
Brown in London, Mrs. Brown in the Highlands, etc.). As "Mrs. Brown,"
a semi-literate, working-class Englishwoman, he wrote humorous commentaries on
contemporary issues. He made a round the world tour (1879-1880) doing
readings of Mrs. Brown monologues. Irregularly cut at edges. Otherwise, fine
condition.
