Check signed and endorsed: "George Axelrod", endorsed: "Gloria Axelrod", in blue ink,
8½x3¼. January 25, 1960. Check no. 1800 drawn on the account of George Axelrod and
Joan Axelrod at the Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City, New York. Payable to Gloria
Axelrod for $2,500.00. Screenwriter George Axelrod (1922-2003) was successful
on Broadway before turning his stage hit The Seven Year Itch (1955) into a
movie. He continued to write for both stage and screen, producing the Broadway
hit Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? (1955-1956) and earning an Oscar
nomination for his screen adaptation of Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961). More
film successes followed, including The Manchurian Candidate (1962) and The
Fourth Protocol (1987). During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Axelrod was
one of the highest paid writers in Hollywood. Many years after he retired as a
screenwriter, Axelrod makes his screen debut with his only acting credit: he had a
small part in The Next Best Thing (2000), starring Madonna and Rupert Everett.
The screenwriter was married to Gloria Washburn from 1942 to 1954. This check was an
alimony payment to his former wife. Crease through center. Cancellation holes. Slight surface
creases. Corners slightly worn. Ink stamps, shows through to front. Otherwise, fine condition.
