Manuscript Letter signed: "Geo. B. Cortelyou" as Personal Secretary to President
McKinley, in iron gall ink, 2p, 4¾x8. No place, 1899 January 10. On official letterhead of
the Executive Mansion, Washington.Addressed to "Mr. J. Stanley-Brown/ Washington,
D.C.". To "Dear Mr. Stanley-Brown". In full: "It has given me pleasure to comply with the
request contained in your recent note, and Mrs. McKinley has asked me to express to
Mrs. Stanley-Brown and yourself her cordial thanks for your courtesy and remembrance.
The gift is highly prized, and in Mrs. McKinley's behalf I beg to assure you of her sincere
appreciation of this evidence of thoughtfulness and esteem. Mr. Porter is glad to have the
photograph, and, no doubt, will send you a personal acknowledgment." GEORGE
BRUCE CORTELYOU (1862-1940) served as Personal Secretary to Presidents
McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt and was the first Secretary of Commerce and Labor,
in addition to serving as Postmaster General and Secretary of the Treasury in the
Roosevelt administration. JOSEPH STANLEY-BROWN, the former Personal
Secretary to President Garfield, had married Mary Garfield, President Garfield's daughter, in
1888. Lightly toned. Encapsulated. Otherwise, fine condition.
