President Roosevelt's secretary responds on behalf of the President regarding a
constituent's concern about the preservation of trees
Typed Letter signed: "Geo B. Cortelyou", 1p, 5¾x9. No place, 1902 October 22. On official
White House letterhead. Addressed to “Mr. R. U. Johnson/ The Century Magazine/ Union
Square/ New York, N.Y.”. To "My dear Sir". In full: "My dear Sir: Your letter of the 20th
instant, with accompanying copy of a communication addressed to Commissioner Hermann, has
been received, and the President requests me to say that anything he can do in the direction of the
preservation of the trees you mention, he will do. The president will be delighted to see the two
books to which you refer and wishes me to thank you cordially for your courtesy. Very truly yours".
After President William McKinley's assassination in 1901, George Bruce Cortelyou
(1862-1940), who had previously been a stenographer to President Grover Cleveland,
continued as President Roosevelt's Secretary until 1903. Roosevelt was impressed with his
expertise in handling the 1902 coal strike negotiations and appointed him as the first
Secretary of Commerce and Labor (1903-1904). Cortelyou also served as Postmaster
General (1905-1907) and Secretary of the Treasury (1907-1909) under Roosevelt before
leaving government service to become President of the New York Consolidated Gas
Company. Normal mailing folds. Toned. Stained on bottom half of page. Corners slightly
worn. Faint pencil notes (unknown hand). Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
