Photograph inscribed and signed on verso: "Dear Frank,/Thanks/mate for
well wishes./I expect to win on the/9th May./Regards/George Barnes/Empire
Welter/Champion/3-5-60". B/w, 3½x5½. George Barnes (b. 1920) won the
Australian welterweight boxing crown in 1953, adding the British Empire title in
the same weight class the following year. After several successful defenses,
he lost both titles in 1956, but regained them in 1959. His optimism
about his impending bout proved unfounded, as he lost the Empire
championship to Brian Curvis, but he retained the Australian crown until early
1962, retiring after losing it. Creased and worn on edges and corners. Top edge
stained above note.
