GEORGE BARNETT SMITH
The British author and biographer signs this handwritten letter regarding writing entries for an encyclopedia in 1884
Autograph letter signed: "G. Barnett Smith" in black ink. 4p, 4¼x7. London, November 19, 1884, in part: "Dear Sir, I saw with much interest that Mr. Hutton had engaged to supply one or two special articles for the Encyclopædia. This has suggested to me that there are several articles which I too should be glad to supply towards this close of the work. [...] Two of these articles are political, & two literary in character." George Barnett Smith (1841-1909) was an English author and journalist. From 1865 to 1868 he was on the editorial staff of The Globe, and from 1868 to 1876 on that of The Echo. He was subsequently a contributor to The Times. Smith made a reputation as an author with a series of biographies, the first of which dealt with Percy Bysshe Shelley (1877). A strong liberal in politics, he was more successful in his Life of W. E. Gladstone (1879; 14th edit. 1898), and in his Life and Speeches of John Bright (1881). He also wrote on the lives of Victor Hugo (1885), Queen Victoria (1886; new edit. 1901), and the German Emperor William I (1887). Toned. Horizontal crease across center. Corners slightly rounded. Otherwise, fine condition.
