George Bernard Shaw sends an autograph letter about the only time he
will be in town.
Autograph Letter Signed: "G. Bernard Shaw" on verso of
3½x4½ postcard. London, 1908 June 21. Addressed by Shaw to:
"Mark Ambrignt/5 Clarence Square/Brighton". In full: "10:15 on
Tuesday-before I go out to rehearsal - is the only moment available, as I shall
be out of town for two days & am full up for the rest." The plays of
Irish dramatist George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) were
characteristically instructional, often including a teacher role model, such
as Henry Higgins in the popular Pygmalion (1913), which was later
adapted as the musical, My Fair Lady (1956; film 1964). Shaw began
writing plays in 1892. His first, Widowers' Houses, voiced his
opinions on society and world reform. Throughout his 58 years as a
playwright, Shaw, who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925,
covered many topics, letting his humor speak for itself. His other major works
include You Never Can Tell (1895), Man and Superman (1902),
Major Barbara (1905), The Doctor's Dilemma (1906) and Saint
Joan (1923). Soiled and stained. Creased not near signature. Lightly worn at
corners.
