George Bernhard Shaw sends an autograph letter saying that the piano
needs to be quiet until after the elections.
Autograph Letter Signed: "G.B.S.", 4½x3½ card, 1922 October
27. In full: "Tell Harriet she can just shut up (her piano) until after
the election as far as political people are concerned. Since music will drown
all other for the next fortnight. It would be great fun for me; but I shall be
out of reach. Many thanks for the invitation." Stamped and addressed on
verso by Shaw to Miss Rose Cohen. The plays of Irish dramatist George
Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) were characteristically instructional, often
including a teacher role model, such as Henry Higgins in the popular
Pygmalion (1913), which was later adapted as the musical, My Fair
Lady (1956; film 1964). Shaw began writing plays in 1892. His first,
Widowers' Houses, voiced his opinions on society and world reform.
Throughout his 58 years as a playwright, Shaw, who received the Nobel
Prize in Literature in 1925, covered many topics, letting his humor speak
for itself. His other major works include You Never Can Tell (1895),
Man and Superman (1902), Major Barbara (1905), The Doctor's
Dilemma (1906) and Saint Joan (1923). Slightly
soiled.
