GEORGE BERNARD SHAW
George Bernard Shaw sends an autograph note about extending the time for one of his plays.
Autograph Note Signed: "G. Bernard Shaw" on verso of 3½x5¼ postcard. London, 1924 December 6. Addressed by Shaw to: "The Actors' Theatre, 48th St Theatre, New York City, N.Y. U.S. America". In full: "You may take the Candida license as extended to the 31st July 1925 or as long as time is business enough to support an unbroken series of matinees. The author's fees do not include his services as a press agent, which will be $25,000 extra." Written the year before Shaw won the Nobel Prize for Literature. This production of Candida, written by Shaw in 1898, opened at the 48th Street Theatre on Broadway on December 12, 1924 (with Katharine Cornell in the title role) and ran for 143 performances. The Actors Theatre also produced 24 performances of the play on Broadway in November 1925. Candida, which debuted on Broadway in 1903, was also revived in 1905, 1907, 1915, 1922, 1937, 1942, 1946, 1952, 1970, 1982 and 1993. The other well-known works of Dublin-born British playwright and critic George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) include Man and Superman, Pygmalion (the basis for My Fair Lady), Saint Joan and Major Barbara. Soiled and stained. Signature fine.
