Shaw signs a check to Trebitsch, who translated Shaw's plays into German. Framed to an overall size of 21x17.
Check signed: "G. Bernard Shaw", 8x3¼. London, 1937 April 23. Check No. CD115205, drawn on the Westminster Bank Limited, Oxford Street Branch, payable to Siegfried Trebitsch for 100 pounds. Endorsed: "Siegfried Trebitsch on verso (windowed to show verso). SIEGFRIED TREBITSCH (1869-1956) an Austrian writer who met Shaw in 1900, was the playwright's partner (from 1902) and translator of Shaw's plays into German. By 1923, Trebitsch became a playwright with Frau Gittas Suhne, which Shaw produced, translated as Jitta's Atonement. The work was rated among the best plays of the American theater of 1923. Payments made to Trebitsch were from royalties for the German productions of Shaw's plays. By 1936,  the year before he signed this check, Shaw had put The Millionairess on stage. The plays of Irish dramatist GEORGE BERNARD SHAW (1856-1950) were characteristically instructional, often including a teacher role model, such as Henry Higgins in the popular Pygmalion (1913), which was later adapted as the musical, My Fair Lady (1956; film 1964). Shaw began writing plays in 1892. His first, Widowers' Houses, voiced his opinions on society and world reform. Throughout his 58 years as a playwright, Shaw, who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925, covered many topics, letting his humor speak for itself. His other major works include You Never Can Tell (1895), Man and Superman (1902), Major Barbara (1905), The Doctor's Dilemma (1906) and Saint Joan (1923). Slightly creased. Bank stamp on front nicks the "G" of Shaw's signature, bank cancellation holes at the flourish of Trebitsch's signature and two lines of writing on front. Pencil notes (unknown hand) at upper margins of front and lower margin of verso, which has bank stamp at upper margin. Overall, fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 21¼x17.
