GEORGE BURNS and GRACIE ALLEN
Vintage sepia publicity photograph of George Burns and Gracie Allen.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Margaret/Sincerely/George Burns" and signed: "Gracie Allen". Sepia tone, 7¾x9¾. In 1922, GEORGE BURNS (1896-1996) was a struggling vaudeville comedian when he met GRACIE ALLEN (1895-1964), who thought she had left show business for a secretarial career. Together, they became one of America's most beloved comedy teams, with Burns writing the lines and playing the straight man, and Allen getting the laughs. They debuted on radio in 1931. A string of comedy films followed over the next decade. Their popular TV show, The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show, ran for eight years (1950-1958) until Gracie's retirement. Less successful at first without Gracie, Burns enjoyed a new period of success in a series of films beginning with The Sunshine Boys (1975), for which he won the Oscar as Best Supporting Actor. The octogenarian even played God for laughs in a series of films beginning with Oh, God (1977). Lightly creased and shaded at blank corners and margins. Minor surface creases (most not evident head on). Minor chip at lower left corner of photograph. Overall, fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 14½x23.
