GEORGE BURNS and GRACIE ALLEN
Rare typed letter from 1954 to a fan signed "George and Gracie". Few Burns
and Allen documents available to the public are signed this way.
Typed letter signed "George and Allen" by both. 1 page, 7x10¼. Los
Angeles, California, May 7, 1954. Addressed to William J. Wedge, 822 W.
Ottawa St., Lansing 15, Michigan. In full: "Dear Mr. Wedge: Thank you
for your very nice letter and the very kind things you say. It is with great
pleasure that we hear from someone such as you and we will try doubly hard to
please you in the future. Thank you again for your thoughtfulness. Sincerely,
George Burns & Gracie Allen." Accompanied by: Original unsigned
envelope that letter was mailed in. No return address but postmarked Los
Angeles, California, May 7, 1954, with one 3¢ blue National Guard stamp affixed.
This letterappears to have been signed by both Burns and Allen. It's
especially interesting because few documents available to the public are signed
"George and Gracie"; they usually signed their full names. BURNS, the star of
vaudeville, radio, television and motion pictures, died in 1996 at the
age of 100. He co-starred with his wife Gracie ALLEN until her
retirement in 1958(she died in 1964), then continued performing in
television, theater and nightclubs as a solo act. When he returned to films in
1975 after a 30-year hiatus, Burns won the 1975 Academy Award for Best
Supporting Actor (The Sunshine Boys). He later starred in the title
role in Oh, God! (1977) and appeared in Going in Style (1979) and
18 Again! (1988). The comedian, who was honored in television specials
celebrating his 90th and 95th birthdays, also wrote Gracie, A Love Story
(1988) and 100 Years, 100 Stories (1996). Lightly toned and creased.
Folded in half horizontally and twice vertically and unfolded. Otherwise in fine
condition.
