The U.S. Congressman from Virginia pens his autograph on this 7¼x2½ piece of paper,
signed in iron gall ink
Signature: “Geo C. Cabell/Danville/Va” in iron gall ink. 7¼x2½. George Craighead Cabell
(1836-1906) was a lawyer, editor and congressman from Virginia. He attended Danville
Academy and later the law department at the University of Virginia in 1857 and after being
admitted to the bar, he started practicing in 1858. He was editor of the Republican and later
Democratic Appeal in Danville and was elected commonwealth attorney on Danville in
1858, remaining there until 1861. At the uprising of the Civil War, he enlisted in the
Confederate Army and eventually was promoted to colonel and served there until the end of
the war, when he resumed practicing law. George Cabell was elected a Democrat to the
United States House of Representatives in 1874, serving from 1875 to 1887; there, he was
chairman of the Committee on Railways and Canals from 1877 to 1881. After being
unsuccessful for reelection in 1886, he resumed practicing law in Danville, Virginia until his
death. He is interred at Green Hill Cemetery in Danville. Lightly toned. Left margin lightly
frayed. Otherwise, fine condition.
