Comic actor George Chandler (1902-1985), who made his film debut in 1928's Cloud Dodger, appeared in over 300 films, including The Virginian (1929), Me and My Gal (1932), Pennies from Heaven (1936), A Star is Born (1937), Beau Geste (1939), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), Tobacco Road (1941), The Ox-Bow Incident (1943), Road to Rio (1947), The Paleface (1948), Hans Christian Andersen (1952), The High and the Mighty (1954), The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966), Escape to Witch Mountain (1975), Every Which Way But Loose (1978) and The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again (1979). The actor/singer, who served as President of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) from 1960-1963, also appeared on the small screen, most notably as Uncle Petrie on Lassie (1958-1959) and in Ichabod and Me (1961), a sitcom he had helped develop.
