Coleman (b.1935), an emblem of jazz hard bop music, began his career as a sideman for
Max Roach before joining the Miles Davis Quintet in 1963. With Davis he recorded
several hit albums including Seven Steps to Heaven, Côte Blues (1963), My Funny
Valentine (1964) and Four & More (1964). A saxophonist for Lionel Hampton and
Charles Mingus among a dozen others, Coleman began leading his own recordings in the
1970s, debuting with Amsterdam After Dark (1976). Other well-known albums include
Playing Changes (1979), At Yoshi's (1987) and Blues Inside Out (1996). In 2002 he was
part of the live concert tribute to Miles Davis entitled Four Generations of Miles.
