GEORGE CRUMB
Pulitzer Prize-winning composer George Crumb wrote this letter to an autograph hunter on letterhead of the University of Pennsylvania's Department of Music in 1979.
Autograph letter signed "George Crumb". 1 page, 5½x8½, on letterhead of the University of Pennsylvania's Department of Music. Dec. 30, 1979. In full: "Dear Mr. Hemminger:- My supply of photo-graphs seems to be exhausted. But I enclose 3 excerpts in musical notation [not included]. Most cordially,". Crumb, born George Henry Crumb in Charleston, West Virginia in 1929, is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer of avant garde and modern music. Crumb is known for his choral compositions which draw on a wide palette of vocal effects, such as hissing, whispering, tongue clicks and shouting; excellent examples include Black Angels (1970), Ancient Voices of Children (1970) and Star Child (1977). Many of his pieces, including Ancient Voices of Children, are inspired by the poetry of Federico García Lorca. Echoes of Time and River (1967) is one of Crumb's few orchestral pieces and won him a Pulitzer Prize. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
