One bar of music and lyrics from Pulitzer Prize-winning composer George Crumb's 1979 composition Apparition signed with his "Best wishes"
Autograph musical quote signed "Best wishes to Jack Gippel/-George Crumb/(Sept. 9, 1985)" in blue ink. Blue and lead pencil on verso. 5x3 card. Titled in blue and black ink: "from Apparition: - [poems of/Walt Whitman]". One bar of music with lyrics: "the night - in si-lence...". Crumb wrote Apparition (full title Apparition, Elegiac Songs and Vocalises for Soprano and Amplified Piano) in 1970. The lyrics are from Walt Whitman's 1865 poem When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd, written after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, and specifically the poem's "Death Carol" section, which is a meditation on death. Apparition was Crumb's second composition for solo voice and piano and his first written in English. Crumb, born George Henry Crumb in Charleston, West Virginia in 1929, is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer of avant garde and modern music. Crumb is known for his choral compositions which draw on a wide palette of vocal effects, such as hissing, whispering, tongue clicks and shouting; excellent examples include Black Angels (1970), Ancient Voices of Children (1970) and Star Child (1977). Many of his pieces, including Ancient Voices of Children, are inspired by the poetry of Federico García Lorca. Echoes of Time and River (1967) is one of Crumb's few orchestral pieces and won him a Pulitzer Prize. Lightly toned and creased, otherwise in fine condition.
