GEORGE CUKOR
He apologizes to film star Joan Crawford for delay in thanking her for a gift.
Typed Letter signed: "Always, George", 1p, 7¼x10¼. No place, 1976 January 21. On personal letterhead to "My dearest Joan". In full: "What's the expression - '..bloody but unbowed..'? Oh why couldn't I have taken a leaf out of Joan Crawford's Book of Beautiful Behavior - sat right down and written a thank-you note? I should have said how grateful I am to have those many, many lovely napkins - in all shapes and sizes. My guests will be dazzled with them for a long time. Of course I'll brag that they were given me by my darling friend, Joan. I do have an excuse - a very weak one. I have been ever so busy looping..dubbing..winding up the picture.[Ellipses in original.] THE BLUE BIRD will try its wings some time in the spring in Washington. I've instructed him to fly straight to Miss Joan Crawford at 150 East 69th Street and giver her all my grateful love." George Cukor (1899-1983), who directed Hollywood films for half a century, won the Best Director Academy Award in 1960 for My Fair Lady and was nominated for Best Director Oscars for Little Women (1932-1933), The Philadelphia Story (1940), A Double Life (1947) and Born Yesterday (1950). Cukor, whose long list of films also includes A Bill of Divorcement (1932, Katharine Hepburn's first film), Dinner at Eight (1933), David Copperfield (1935), Romeo and Juliet (1936), The Prisoner of Zenda (1937), Adam's Rib (1949), Pat and Mike (1952), Heller in Pink Tights (1960) and A Star is Born (1954) and two made-for-TV films. The Blue Bird (1976), the first joint US-Soviet film production, is not considered one of Cukor's better efforts. He had fared better with Joan Crawford as his star in A Woman's Face (1941). Lightly creased. Light mailing folds. Purples stains in upper left margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
