GEORGE SNELL
Signed handwritten letter of the Nobel Prize winning geneticist,
dated in 1978.
Autograph letter signed: "George Snell", 1½p, 6x7. No place,
1978 May 28. On his personal letterhead to "Dear Prof. Gilde".
In full: "Your very kind letter of April 21 arrived while Mrs.
Snell and I were away in Israel. We took the occasion of our trip there to spend
some time seeing the country. A most interesting experience. It is indeed
gratifying to know that you have found my work appropriate for inclusion in your
courses. Certainly histocompatibility studies have turned out to have
ramifications which I never dreamed of when I started work in this area. If you
are ever in this area to visit Acadia National Park or the Jackson Laboratories,
Mrs. Snell and I would be delighted if you would look us up." George
Snell (1903-1996) shared the 1980 Nobel Prize for Medicine with Baruj
Benacerraf and Jean Dausset for their discoveries concerning genetically
determined structures on the cell surface that regulate immunological
reactions. This work focused on histocompatibility (a compatibility between
the genetic makeup of donor and host such that a tissue transplant from the
former will not be rejected by the latter). Light diagonal crease at lower right
margin, nicked at lower right blank edge. Fine condition.
