GEORGE DIONYSIS TILLMAN
The U.S. Congressman from the state of South Carolina pens his signature on this 7¼x3 piece of paper
Signature: “G.D. Tillman/Clarks Hill/S.C.” in iron gall ink. 7¼x3. George Dionysis Tillman (1826-1902) was a Democratic politician from South Carolina who served as a state representative, from 1854 to 1855 and in 1864, and state senator in 1865. In 1856 he killed a man over a disagreement during a faro game and received a two year sentence, during which he was allowed to pursue courtship and continue with his law practice. Tillman was a member of the State constitutional convention in 1865, held under the Reconstruction proclamation of President Andrew Johnson. He was an unsuccessful candidate for election in 1876 to the 45th Congress and was later elected as a Democrat to the 46th Congress from the Fifth District (1879-1881), and re-elected to the 47th Congress (1881-1883); he was elected to the 48th Congress from the Second district and to the four succeeding Congresses (1883-1893), and served as chairman of the Committee on Patents in the 52nd Congress. Since he was an unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination in 1892 he served as a member of the State constitutional convention in 1895, and was an unsuccessful candidate for election as Governor of South Carolina in 1898. Aside his political and legal activities, he engaged in agricultural pursuits and also worked as a publicist. He is interred in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Community Cemetery in Clarks Hill, South Carolina. Lightly toned. Irregular cut. Left margin slightly frayed. Otherwise, fine condition.
