George Dennis, U. S. Senator from Maryland, wrote this letter on U.
S. Senate stationery about the Maryland Superintendent of Education in 1873, his
first year as senator.
Autograph letter signed "Geo.R.Dennis". Leadpencil
notations below signature and blackink notations inside letter, both in
unknown hand. 1 page, 4¾x8, 1 sheet folded, on ruled U. S. Senate stationery.
March 10, 1873. Addressed to R. M. Neilson, M. D. In full:
"Dear SirYour letter of the 4th Mch-73-is at hand. Prof. Newell.
is .Sup.t of Education in Md. Address him Baltimore, Md. He holds his
appointment from the Gov. Yours,". Maryland physician Dennis
(1822-1882) served as a colonel in the Union army the American Civil War
before being elected Democratic U. S. Senator from Maryland
(1873-1879). He was also a member of the Maryland state senate (1854-1856) and
the state house of delegates (1867). Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Folded
twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
