days before...." Badger was Secretary of the Navy in 1841 under Harrison and
Tyler until he resigned on September 11th along with four other members of
Tyler's cabinet (all except for Secretary of State Daniel Webster) to protest

Carolina (1846-1855) and was nominated as Associated Justice by President
Fillmore in 1853 but was not confirmed by his Senate colleagues. After his
Senate term, he returned to Raleigh to resume his practice of law until his
death in 1866. Fragile and worn. Lightly stained and soiled. Nicked torn
edges, small portion torn out at top blank margin touching one letter. Body of
letter fine with light show through. Erased pencil notes at corners. Lightly
