Addressed to "Mr. Norman Jones/ 60 Dumbleton Avenue/ Leicester Le3 2EG" at footer. George Douglas-Hamilton, 10th Earl of Selkirk (1906-1994) was a nobleman, born in England, but of Scottish descent. He began his political career shortly after completing his formal education, becoming a member of the Edinburgh Town Council (1935-1940). During World War II he served in the Royal Air Force.He succeeded to the Earldom in 1940, following the death of his father. After the war he was elected as a Scottish representative peer, serving from 1945 to 1963. Douglas-Hamilton first served as a Lord in Waiting to King George VI and subsequently to Queen Elizabeth II (1951-1953). Then, from 1953 to 1955, he occupied the Ministerial office of Paymaster-General. Moreover, he served as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (1955-1957) and as First Lord of the Admiralty (1957-1959). Finally, from 1959 to 1963, he functioned as UK High Commissioner for Singapore and Commissioner General for South-East Asia. Several creases resulting from both vertical and horizontal folds. Creasing along corners and edges. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
