GEORGE EASTMAN
George Eastman sends a personal letter of sympathy to an ailing friend
Autograph Letter signed: "GE", 2p (integral leaf), 6x7. Oak Lodge, Enfield, North Carolina, 1929 April 15. On personal letterhead to "Dear Nan". In full: "I am mighty sorry that urticaria [Urticaria is the medical name for hives] or any old disease has got hold of you and especially that it will prevent the pleasure of my having you down here on this visit. Hurry up and get rid of it so you can come to luncheon Saturday May 4th anyway. I don't think much of a whole Medical School that can't cure a little disease like that. With much love." Fine condition. Accompanied by autograph envelope, unsigned, addressed in Eastman's hand to Mrs. Bayne Tines, Rochester, N.Y., postmarked on same date. Lightly soiled. Paperclip impression at top center. Otherwise, fine condition. American inventor and manufacturer GEORGE EASTMAN (1854-1932) revolutionized the photography industry with his inventions of flexible film (1884) and the inexpensive Kodak box camera (1888). He entered the photographic plate-making business in 1880 after inventing a machine to coat glass plates. The mass production of his dollar Brownie camera in 1900 made photography available to children. Eastman's philanthropic gifts to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Rochester (New York) and the Eastman School of Music, which he founded, exceeded $100 million. Two items.
