GEORGE EASTMAN
Eastman sends a letter expressing hope for success
Typed Letter Signed: "Geo Eastman", 1p, 8x9. Rochester, New
York, 1931 January 2. To Mr. Victor Wagner, Rochester, New York. In
full: "I am very glad to know that you have got located at Loew's
and hope you will have a happy and successful time there, which I feel confident
you will. With kind regards to you and Mrs. Wagner, and best wishes for the New
Year to you both." George Eastman (1854-1932) perfected the process
for making photographic dry plates (1880) and invented flexible transparent film
(1889) that would prove vital to the subsequent development of the motion
picture industry. By 1912, LOEW'S THEATRICAL ENTERPRISES consisted of
400 cinemas all across the country. Eastman revolutionized the photography
industry with his inventions of the inexpensive Kodak box camera (1888).
He entered the photographic plate-making business in 1880 after inventing a
machine to coat glass plates. The mass production of his dollar Brownie
camera in 1900 made photography available to children. Eastman's
philanthropic gifts to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University
of Rochester (New York) and the Eastman School of Music, which he founded,
exceeded $100 million. Creased. Folds. Horizontal fold touches signature.
Vertical fold between the "as" of Eastman. Upper portion cut off, removing
letterhead. Lightly stained at blank areas. Pencil erasures at lower left
margin. Plastic tape at upper right verso, no show through.
