GEORGE F. EDMUNDS
Edmunds handwrote and signed this letter to his wife in 1879 after an ocean
trip from England and to plan a trip for her, possibly to meet her
husband.
Autograph letter signed:"George.", 3 pages, 4¾x7¾, 1
page folded, front and verso. Written onboard the "'RMS Gallia/Queensboro
Harbor", possibly in New York City, 1879 November 2. Edmunds wrote this
letter to "My dear, dear wife", Susan Marsh Edmunds, about a boat trip
that started in Liverpool. This letter also had details of a trip that Susan
might take, possibly to meet with her husband. Republican Edmunds
(1828-1919) represented Vermont in the U.S. Senate from April 3, 1866
until his resignation on Nov. 1, 1891. He served as President Pro Tempore of
the Senate from 1883 to 1885 when, with no Vice President after Garfield's
assassination, he was next in line to the Presidency. He was also a
member of the Electoral Commission that decided the hotly contested election of
1876 - a squeaker with only one electoral vote between Republican victor
Rutherford B. Hayes and Democratic Samuel J. Tilden, who won the popular vote.
Encapsulated in Mylar. Not examined outside encapsulation. Lightly toned
and creased. Show-through touches handwriting and signature. Handwriting, but
not signature, is lightly smeared in places but legible. Folded once
horizontally and twice vertically and unfolded. Otherwise, fine
condition.
