Manuscript Letter Signed: "Geo F. Edmunds" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 8x9½, inlaid on 11x15¼ sheet. Washington, D.C., 1883 December 18. To Darwin C. Parry, Esq., Troy, N.Y. In full: "I have yours of 17th, Mr. Collamer did not serve with me in the Senate. He died in the fall of 1865 & was succeeded by Hon. Luke P. Poland. Mr. Foot died the last of March 1866 & I succeeded him." Solomon Foot served as Whig then Republican Senator from Vermont from 1851 until his death in Washington on March 28, 1866. Republican Jacob Collamer was Senator from Vermont from 1855 until his death in Vermont on November 9, 1865. Succeeding Collamer, Republican Luke P. Poland represented Vermont from November 21, 1865 to 1867, then served as a member of the House of Representatives from 1867-1875 and 1883-1885. Succeeding Foot, Republican George F. Edmunds (1828-1919) represented Vermont in the U.S. Senate from April 3, 1866 until his resignation on November 1, 1891. He served as President Pro Tempore of the Senate from 1883-1885 when, with no Vice President after Garfield's assassination, he was next in line to the Presidency. Lightly creased and soiled. Vertical crease through "m" in Edmunds. Pencil note (unknown hand) on lower margin of inlaid sheet. Mounting remnant on verso (light show through) at upper right blank margin. Fine condition.
