GEORGE F. HOAR and JOHN HENRY GEAR
Album leaf signed by United States Senators George F. Hoar, from Massachusetts, and John Henry Gear, from Iowa
Signatures: "Geo F Hoar/Mass" and "Yours truly/John Gear/Iowa". Two unknown signatures on verso. Black ink notations on front and verso in unknown hand. 6½x5¼. HOAR (1826-1904), who served as a U. S. Representative (1869-1877) and Senator (1877-1904) from Massachusetts, was one of the 15 members of the Electoral Commission appointed by the Congress to decide the outcome of the Nov. 7, 1876 presidential election between Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel J. Tilden. That year, he was also one of the managers appointed to conduct impeachment proceedings against ex-Secretary of War, William W. Belknap. An organizer of the Republican Party in his home state, Hoar was also the author of the Presidential Succession Act of 1886, the 1887 bill that repealed the Tenure of Office Act and much of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act (1890). Following the Spanish-American War, he became a leading opponent of imperialism, speaking out before the 1900 election on the dangers of the U.S. becoming involved in the world-wide political arena. GEAR (1825-1900) was Governor of Iowa (1878-1881) and a Congressman (1887-1891) and Senator (1895-1900) from that state. He was also Assistant Secretary of the Treasury under President Benjamin Harrison (1892-1893). Lightly toned and soiled. Show-through touches both signatures. Hoar's siganture is lightly smeared but legible. Irregular bottom edge. Neatly torn from album along left edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
