George F. Peabody signs a stock certificate for 100 shares.
Stock Certificate signed: "Geo Foster Peabody" as Chairman of the St. Louis, Alton and Terre Haute Railroad Company, 1p, 10¾x7 with 3½x7 receipt portion affixed at left border. New York, 1889 November 14. Numbered 2090. Certifying that "S, V. White & Co. are entitled to One Hundred Shares of the Capital Stock of the St. Louis, Alton and Terre haute Railroad Company...." After joining the firm of Spencer Trask & Company on May 2, 1881, George Foster Peabody (1852-1938) personally handled most of the railroad investments of the firm. The firm financed railroad construction in the western United States and Mexico as well as utilities and other industrial enterprises. Peabody, who advocated government ownership of railroads, served as a director in numerous corporations and served on many college boards before retiring in 1906 to devote his time to philanthropy. He was a government director of the Federal Reserve Bank in New York (1914-1921). "X" cut bank cancellations affect signature, which is legible. Creased. Overall, fine condition.
