Check signed: "Geo. F. Getty", and endorsed on verso: "J. Paul Getty/by Mabel McCreery", 8¾x3. Los Angeles, California, 1917 June 29. Check No. 3195, drawn on the Los Angeles branch of Security-First National Bank of Los Angeles, payable to "J. Paul Getty" for $1,000.00. In 1904, attorney GEORGE F. GETTY (1855-1930) moved his wife and son, Jean Paul also known as J. Paul, from Minneapolis to the Indian Territory (Oklahoma), where he began a career as an independent oilman. Within two years, Getty had amassed a fortune from his Minnehoma Oil Company and moved his family to Los Angeles. In 1913, Getty lent (not gave) his 21-year-old son money to invest in oil wells. The young Getty made his first million by 1915, and the following year the father and son incorporated the Getty Oil Company, an early precursor to the great conglomerate. Although both men were successful in business, George was opposed to his son's personal lifestyle. In his will, he gave controlling interest in the Getty Oil Company to his wife, although Jean Paul became President of the firm. Usual bank cancelation holes and stamps not near signature. Ink note (unknown hand) at upper left corner. Fold creases through "F." of signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
