George Gershwin (1898-1937), born Jacob Gershovitz (later shortened to Gershwin), was one of the greatest songwriters of his day and also a "serious" composer who bridged the gap between classical and popular music. In 1910, his mother purchased a piano for George's older brother, 14-year-old Ira, but it was 12-year-old George who quickly took to it. George's first Broadway show, La, La Lucille, ran for one hundred performances in 1919, the same year Al Jolson heard Gershwin's 1917 song "Swanee" and added it to his touring show. Gershwin's works include Rhapsody in Blue (1924), Porgy and Bess (1935) and the first Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, Of Thee I Sing (1931). In 1937, the year he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song, Gershwin died of a brain tumor in 1937 at the age of 38. Stained, touching the "eo" of George. Staple holes and impression at upper left blank corner. Overall, fine condition.
