GEORGE GERSHWIN & HIS PARENTS SIGN AND ENDORSE A CHECK!
GEORGE GERSHWIN. Partly Printed Check signed: "George
Gershwin", 6½x2½. New York, 1932 March 14. Drawn on his personal
account at The National City Bank of New York made payable to his mother,
Rose Gershwin, for $108.75. Endorsed on verso by his mother, "Rose
Gershwin" and his father, "M Gershwin", who died two months
later. Rosa and Moishe Gershovitz came to New York from Russia in 1891 and
the family name was Americanized first to Gerwvyn then Gershwin. In 1910,
his mother purchased a piano for 14-year-old Ira but it was 12-year-old George
who quickly took to it. George's first Broadway show, La, La Lucille, ran
for one hundred performances in 1919, the same year Al Jolson heard
Gershwin's 1917 song "Swanee" and added it to his touring show. Gershwin's
works include Rhapsody in Blue (1924), Porgy and Bess (1935) and
the first Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, Of Thee I Sing (1931). He died
of a brain tumor in 1937 at the age of 38. Vertical fold touches first "e" in
George. Bank cancellation hole just touches the top of the first "G" in George.
Cancellation stamp touches the "sh" in Gershwin. Overall, fine
condition.
