GEORGE GILFILLAN
The Scottish minister and "Spasmodic Poet" penned this sentiment in
Dundee.
Autograph Sentiment signed: "I am/yours truly/George
Gilfillan/Dundee 24th July/1858", 3¾x3½ affixed to card. Scottish minister,
poet and critic George Gilfillan (1813-1878) was classed in a group of
Spasmodic Poets, so called because they interjected introspective personal
soliloquies into their poems. This poetic style, popular in the 1840s, went out
of fashion after publication of a parody: Firmillian: a Spasmodic Tragedy
(1854). Gilfillan's most successful work was Bards of the Bible
(1851). He published a semi-autobiographical History of a Man
in 1856 and completed a biography of Robert Burns just before his death. Folds.
Heavily toned. Lightly soiled. Edges slightly worn. Light surface creases.
Otherwise, fine condition.
