GEORGE H. ELLWANGER
The author and horticulturalist writes to a fellow author about recently published books.
Autograph Letter signed: "George H. Ellwanger", 2 pages (integral leaf), 7¾x6. No place, no date. To an unknown person, in full: "I enclose the last little thing in verse of my brother's. I want to see your John Payne and I am going to try to see you when I am in town next time, though I shall only ask for a little of your valuable time. I know how many demands you have upon it. You have scarcely seen have you a very lovely little piece of English bookmaking just out, entitled 'Silver Points' by John Wray. Still you are as liable to have it as I. It has just been sent me, and the verse is as curious as the book itself. There is a good deal of truth the motto most happily chosen. It is not an easy matter for any artist to use an antique subject and render it fresh and pleasing. I was not aware that you were an artist with the brush, though perhaps I should have guessed it from your knowledge of art matters as apparent in the text of your books. I suppose you have seen Edgerton Castle's vol. on ex libris just published by Bells. It is a very pretty book. I am glad if the newspaper article served to amuse you. Yes, beautiful things around one are very nice. But you have written books that will live forever, and are worth more than any art objects that money or haste can procure. I have wearied you, however, and you will thank me if I stop short at once, after wishing you all sorts of pleasant things. Most sincerely". Horticulturalist and authorGeorge Herman Ellwanger (1848-1906) was best known for his Garden's Story, and for his articles in agricultural and gardening magazines. He wrote on a variety of subjects, however, including a history of gastronomy entitled Pleasures of the Table (1902). Another popular title was Idyllists of the Country Side. The brother mentioned in the letter was H. B. Ellwanger, author of The Rose (a treatise on the flower). Creased and toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
