GEORGE H. WILLIAMS
Card signed by the U. S. Attorney General
Signature: "Geo. H. Williams/Atty Genl". 3x1¾ card. Williams
(1823-1910) served as President Ulysses S. Grant's Attorney General from
1871 to 1875. In 1873, he was nominated by Grant to be Chief Justice of the
Supreme Court, but his nomination was not confirmed by the U.S. Senate. He
was also a Republican United States Senator from Oregon (1865-1871). As a
senator, Williams was a member of a commission to settle American claims
against Great Britain, where a number of Confederate commerce raiders were built
during the American Civil War (the so-called Alabama claims from the CSS
Alabama, one of the raiders). He also allied himself with Radical
Republicans against President Andrew Johnson's Reconstruction programs after the
Civil War and, later, supported the impeachment of Johnson. Lightly
toned. Signature is lightly smeared but legible. Otherwise, fine
condition.
