GEORGE H. WILLIAMS
As Attorney General he appoints an Assistant District Attorney at Jackson, Mississippi
Manuscript Document signed: "Geo. H. Williams" as Attorney General, 2 pages (front and verso), 8¼x10¼. Department of Justice, Washington, 1872 November 15. To E. P. Jacobson, US Attorney, Jackson, Mississippi. In full: "I have received your letter of the 17th ultimo relative to the continuance of employment of your present Assistant, Mr. Branigan, and in compliance with your wishes, enclose a Commission appointing him as your Assistant [Item not included.] for one year from this date. Very respectfully". George H. Williams (1823-1910) was a US Senator from Oregon (1865-1871). He was a pallbearer at President Lincoln's funeral, and supported the impeachment of President Johnson. He served on the Alabama Claims Commission, which arbitrated claims arising from Confederate raiders built in Britain. He served as President Ulysses S. Grant's Attorney General from 1871 to 1875. In this office, he aggressively prosecuted crimes committed by the Ku Klux Klan, in accord with President Grant's policy. In 1873, he was nominated by Grant to be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, but his nomination was not confirmed by the U.S. Senate. He was compelled to resign in April 1875 after allegations of bribery. Voters in Portland, Oregon, must have disbelieved or forgotten these allegations when they elected Williams as Mayor (1902-1905). Multiple mailing folds. Ink smears throughout documents (legible). Top left corner chipped. Corners lightly worn. Notches at folds. Toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
