GEORGE HAVEN PUTNAM
On G. P. Putnam's Sons letterhead, he thanks an English author for a
sympathetic paper on his sister, Mary Putnam Jacobi, and offers suggestions for
getting it published in the US.
Typed Letter signed: "Geo. Haven Putnam", 1 page, 8½x11.
New York, New York, 1925 August 11. On letterhead of G. P. Putnam's Sons
of New York and London to "Dear Mrs. Cooke", in full:
"I have read with interest the sympathetic paper on my sister,
Mary Putnam Jacobi, which has been sent to the publishing office during my
absence in London. I can but be please that my sister's career and service in
the work of higher education for women should have secured such discriminating
and sympathetic consideration, presented in graceful and excellent English. I
should, of course, be well pleased if your paper might be brought into print in
the ATLANTIC MONTHLY or some other periodical of the dignity and influence of
the ATLANTIC. hardly find it practicable to make space for so long a paper. In
case the paper cannot be utilized as written, I should be glad if he would care
to print as a review of the volume, which serves as a text for your article, a
briefer paper from your pen. The manuscript goes forward today to my good friend
Ellery Sedgwick, head of the Atlantic Publishing Company. I am writing to
express my cordial appreciation for the sympathetic interest with which the
article has been written. I have made the necessary correction in regard to the
editorial responsibility for the Memoir. I was able to be of service to my
sister Ruth, being the only one of the family old enough to have had direct
knowledge of the events of the earlier years in Dr. Mary's career. Aside from
that, my contribution to the book was restricted to the preparation of the
introduction. I am, with cordial regards, Very truly yours, (signature) -written
vertically on left side- P.S. If Mr. Sedgwick is not prepared to utilize this
article, I suggest that I could send it with your permission to Dr. Smythe,
editor of the International Literary Journal. I should like to have the pleasure
of meeting you, and should be glad if, when you are again within reach of New
York you will give me the honor of an appointment." GEORGE HAVEN PUTNAM
(1844-1930), studying in Germany when the Civil War broke out, returned to
fight for the Union cause. Captured at the Battle of Cedar Creek (October 1864),
he spent the war's duration as a POW, writing about this experience in a 1912
book. When his father George P. Putnam died in1872, Putnam became President
of what was now G. P. Putnam's Sons Publishers. He held that post for 54
years. Putnam was active in many civic causes, and lobbied successfully
for stronger international copyright protection laws (1891). He had a close
association with Theodore Roosevelt, having employed TR as a young man, and
published several of the President's books. Putnam himself wrote several
books, ranging from military history to children's stories. Mary Putnam
Jacobi (1842-1906) was a prominent physician, advocating a rigorously
scientific approach to medical research; and an early suffragette and feminist.
