GEORGE JACKSON MIVART
Signature of the English biologist who was condemned by both the Catholic Church and Darwinists. Extremely rare!
Signature: "G.J. Mivart," in black ink, 2x½ attached to 5x3½ printed color image of a sailboat at sea (2 surfaces). St. Geroge Jackson Mivart (1827-1900) was an English biologist. Beginning his career as an adamant Darwinist, Mivart is known for later refuting natural selection. Historians have agreed that Mivart's early obsession with natural selection had more to do with his friendly relationship with T.H. Huxley, a.k.a. "Darwin's Bulldog" than it did with the theory. After Huxley, a known anti-Catholic, rebuffed Mivart for his Catholic association, Mivart quickly changed his tune and immediately started a war on Darwinism. Controversies ensued, and the more powerful Huxley won in the end, effectively shunning Mivart from joining the prestigious Athenaeum Club. Mivart was also condemned by the Catholic Church. His various books were attempts to explain his evolution in logic and his new regard for teleology, such as Nature and Thought (1882), and in the Origin of Human Reason (1889). Attached to 5x3 printed image (2 surfaces). Image creased and right edge frayed from binding. Pin sized hole at top margin. Ink note (unknown hand) at lower margin. Small tear at left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
