GEORGE JEAN NATHAN
Nathan returns a letter from a female saying that the women whose
picture she sent him is more suited for his colleague
Typed Letter Signed: "George". 1 page, 5½x8. New York, New
York, 1924 September 10 on The American Mercury letterhead to a Miss
Anita. In Full: "Dear Miss Anita: The photo of Miss Amour tempts me
sorely. Yet I feel that she is more Mencken's type than mine. Don't you detect a
faint resemblance to Zoe? I have discovered a superb place for parties. I shall
see to it that you are elected to membership. My best to Johann. And love to
you." George Jean Nathan (1882-1958) was an American drama critic and
editor. He attended Cornell University where he was an editor of The Cornell
Daily Sun. He and his colleague H.L. Menken co-edited The Smart Set,
a literary magazine and co-founded The American Mercury. Nathan provided
elegant irreverent observations of America. His criticisms were published into
several books over the years including The Critic and the Drama,
Passing Judgments and Magic Mirror. His philosophy of criticism is
positioned in Autobiography of an attitude. Lightly toned. Two horizontal letter fold
creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
