Typed letter Signed: "George Jean Nathan". 1 page. 5½x8½. New York City, New York, 1922 November 16 on The Smart Set letterhead to Marvin Taylor, Esq., New York City, New York. In Full: "Dear Taylor: I have been so blamed busy since I spoke to you over the telephone that I haven't had a moment to call you up. I hope that we shall be able to get together the first of the coming week. I shall telephone you on Monday or Tuesday morning. Sincerely," George Jean Nathan (1882-1958) was an American drama critic and editor. He attended Cornell University where he was an editor of The Cornell Daily Sun. He and his colleague H.L. Menken co-edited The Smart Set, a literary magazine and co-founded The American Mercury. Nathan provided elegant irreverent observations of America. His criticisms were published into several books over the years including The Critic and the Drama, Passing Judgments and Magic Mirror. His philosophy of criticism is positioned in Autobiography of an attitude. Two filing holes at left edge. Two horizontal mailing fold creases. Pencil notes on top right (unknown hand).
