From the plaque: "George Clyde Kell/Philadelphia A.L. 1943-1946/Detroit A.L. 1946-1952/Boston A.L. 1952-1954/Chicago A.L. 1954-1956/Baltimore A.L. 1956-1957/Premier A.L. third baseman of the 1940's and 1950's. Solid hitter and sure-handed fielder with strong, accurate arm. Batted over .300 9 times, leading league with .343 in 1949. Led A.L. third basemen in fielding pct. 7 times, assists 4 times and putouts and double plays twice." Hall of Famer George Kell (1922-2009) worked diligently at all facets of the game, relying on constant practice to become a solid hitter and a sure-handed fielder. He batted over .300 nine times and topped American League third basemen in fielding percentage seven times, utilizing a strong and accurate throwing arm to lead the league in assists four times and in putouts and double plays twice each. In 1949, Kell dramatically captured the American League batting title when he edged out Ted Williams by less than two ten-thousandths of a point, .34291 to .34276. His 13 strikeouts in 1949 is the lowest total for a batting champion in big league history. Fine condition.
