Program Signed: "George Kelly", 15 pages, B/w 6x9. A program for his play The Torchbearers, performed at the Phoenix Center of Performing Arts, week beginning March 26, 1968. Kelly directs the play he wrote forty five years prior. The Torchbearers (1923) was the basis for the 1935 motion picture Doubting Thomas and the 1939 movie Too Busy to Work. George Kelly (1887-1974) was an American playwright, actor director and screenwriter and the uncle of actress/princess Grace Kelly. In 1926 he won a Pulitzer Prize for Craig's Wife (1925), the play, like most of Kelly's work, portrayed women as spoiled, domineering and destructive. Other stage productions of Kelly's include The Torch-Bearers (1923), The Show-off (1924), Behold, the Bridegroom (1927), Philip Goes Forth (1931), Reflected Glory (1936) and The Fatal Weakness (1947).
