Television actor Lindsey (1928-2012) was best known for his role as Goober Pyle (1964-1971) on The Andy Griffith Show and its sequel, Mayberry, RFD. He also appeared as a regular on Hee Haw (1972-1991). Lindsey has raised over $1 million for the Alabama Special Olympics and thousands for other charities such as the Alabama Association of Retarded Citizens and established and perpetuated the George Lindsey Academic Scholarships at University of North Alabama. He was awarded the Governor's Achievement Award (1995), inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, and the state named the George Lindsey Highway in Birmingham after him.
