The Pullman's Palace Car Company had been incorporated under "Special Act of the Legislature of the State of Illinois" in 1867. American engineer GEORGE M. PULLMAN (1831-1897) made American travel easier when he designed the Pullman Sleeping Car, which was marketed as a luxurious means of travel. Besides the sleeping car bearing his name, Pullman devised cars to suit what he thought were necessary needs for travel, including dining and kitchen cars, tailor cars, ticket collecting cars and vestibule cars which converted an entire train into a single car. After the success of his railroad cars, Pullman created the company town of Pullman, which he he believed was a safe and happy environment for his workers.
