George M. Pullman signs a stock certificate for stock in Pullman's Palace Car Company.
Partly printed stock certificate signed: "Geo. M. Pullman" as President, Pullman's Palace Car Company, 1p, 9x5¾ Chicago, Illinois, 1869 September 1. In part: "Charles S. Partlett is entitled to Fourty Shares of the Capital Stock of Pullman's Palace Car Company which is transferable only on the Books of the Company in person or by attorney upon the surrender of this Certificate." The capital stock was $1.75 million dollars with each share being $100.00 in value. The company was incorporated under a "Special Act of the Legislature of the State of Illinois, A.D. 1867." Glued at the left is the stub, partially split. Overall size, 14x10¾. George M. Pullman (1831-1897,) and a friend designed the Pullman Railroad Car with a folding upper berth (1864) and extensible seat cushions to make a lower berth. The Pullman Palace Car Co. was organized in 1867. Besides the sleeping car bearing his name, Pullman also devised dining cars (1868), chair cars (1875) and vestibule cars (1887). Blank upper right corner is cracked but repaired on verso with tape. Five small cancellation holes punched through Pullman's signature. Paper missing at lower right corner. Binding holes at left margin.
