5½x8½. GEORGE M. ROBESON (1829-1897), a Union General during the American
Civil War, served as Grant's Secretary of the Navy from June 25, 1869 to March 3, 1877.
The Union Navy had come out of the Civil War as the largest and most powerful naval
force in the world, with more than 670 ships and 57,000 men. Except for unrelated
incidents in different parts of the world, the Navy saw no military action until the
Spanish-American War in 1898. Robeson, twice an unsuccessful candidate for U.S. Senator
from New Jersey (1876, 1880), served as U.S. congressman for the state from 1879 to 1883.
JOHN A. J. CRESWELL (1828-1891) served as Postmaster General under President
Ulysses S. Grant from March 6, 1869 until he tendered his resignation on July 6, 1874 to
accept a position on the Alabama Claims Commission. Creswell, a highly effective
Postmaster, was one of the few original members of Grant's Cabinet to avoid scandal.
Robeson was accused of diverting large sums from the Navy budget for personal use, but
was never prosecuted. Left edge ragged from previous binding. Bottom left corner cut away.
